Hair Cutting Instructions. Learn to cut your kids hair and save hundreds of dollars along with time and energy.
Hair Cutting Instruction Tip: Cut hair when its freshly washed so any cowlicks aren't as springy. If you are not able to shampoo and condition before you cut, spray your kid's hair with warm water until it is completely saturated.
Always have a game plan first. Know how you want to cut your kids hair. If you want to take an inch off the ends, start with a half inch than work your way up
Let's get started with hair cutting instruction:
Cutting Medium to Long Hair:
To section the hair:
* Use a wide-tooth comb to divide hair into top and back sections as follows
*Part hair from back of one ear, over top of head to the back of the other ear. Hair in front is the top section
* Divide remaining back section from ear to ear into additional 1 inch thick horizontal sections. Clip all but the bottom section up
To cut the back of the hair:
Run a fine tooth comb through bottom section to make sure all the hair is going in the same direction and divide into a left and right section
Cut right section first. Hold hair, with a little tension, in between index finger and middle finger of non-cutting hand and trim half of desired length (remember 1/2 inch equals 1 inch) in right to left motion
When you cut the left side, pull over4 a small section of already trimmed right side as a guide for length, then cut so that both sides are even.
Let down next section above, run a fine tooth comb through both layers, then cut length of this section to match length of bottom section, dividing it again into a right and a left section first. Repeat on all horizontal sections.
To cut the top of the hair:
Release top section. Part to create side sections. Each should start 1 inch above the ear and include all hair below that point from temple to back. Clip the rest of the hair up and leave side sections down.
Cut right side section first. Using already cut hair from back sections as a guide, cut from right to left. Repeat for left side ssecction. Look at length of side sections from front to see the are even and adjust accordingly.
Release hair from top in 1/2 inch sections and cut to match length of first side sections as you did with the back
(Note: Keep in mind that curly hair can be inches longer when wet. If you want to remove an inch from hair when it's dry, cut no more than 1/4 inch from wet hair, using hardly no tension
Also- Alligator clips are great for holding up sections of hair)

Most children are not that enthusiastic about getting their hair cut. Twenty minutes can seem like an eternity to a young child. Keeping them still during a haircut involves a bit of trickery on your part. You need to provide a fun experience so your child will want you to keep cutting their hair.

and don't forget, unless your child absolutely loves getting their hair stylist, they probably prefer you to cut their hair. They feel more comfortable. Don't think they are going to behave like angels though (I hope for your sake they do LOL)
Here are a few tips to make the experience an enjoyable on (or at least tolerable :-)
Pick their best time of the day. Nobody knows your child as you do. You know when they are usually at their most upbeat time of the day. Don't ever try to cut your child's hair when they are tired or cranky or not feeling well
Plan your haircut in advance to speed it up. Picture in your mind ahead of time how you are going to cut the hair
Make sure your combs and brushes are kid friendly by being smooth, soft and well rounded on the tips
Plan their haircuts around their favorite television programs or rent a popular videi
(for those of you that have ever been a cartoon cuts salon, you would see how the kids get their hair washed by the big green elephant and each station has a small TV and they play the most popular cartoons.
Bribe them with whatever you have- A cheap toy, a lollipop (like they do at the salons, some of their favorite cookies) Something cheap but that they love
Remember, the whole key to learning to cut your own child's hair is to save money and spending quality time with your child (Just another way to bond :-)
Also, start small, thing big when it comes to cutting your child's hair. In the beginning, take baby steps like bang trims and end trims. Don't attempt a drastic cut the first time. Remember, you want this to be a memorable experience but a good memory not a nightmare LOL
